Cocker Spaniel has fits again

Poor Charlie. Full name is suppose to be Charlie Brown. We usually call him Charlie Bucket if reprimanding him. Our family is more of a mind to think of Charlie and the Choclate Factory than Peanuts.

Well, Charlie just had another of his fits. They are getting pretty bad and we expect he will not live much longer. On the other hand, we have thought this for years now. They are getting worse and more frequent it seems. He came from the Humane Society and his background is unclear. However, we did some detective work and found a lady in Idaho that was in jail for fradulent selling of a supposedly rare pure breed dog! Charlie? We suspect that somebody traveling in Washington either dumpped him or more likely he jumpped out and was lost. We estimated his age at around 5 years then… and, it has been some years… maybe 7 now? IDK.

When he has these fits, or seizures,  the back legs are inoperatable and he flops and flailes about trying to get up. His eyes gloss over and he drools excessively. You can feel the fear.

The only thing we have found to do for him is to maybe place a blanket over him. Hold him and assure him that he is okay and should be calm. We have determined that getting excited can set off the fits and certainly can escalate how bad and how long they are.

If you are in a similar postion with your pet, try to remain calm yourself (the dog will sense your excitement too). And, just try to “be there” for him. Try to sooth, calm, and protect from harm… till it passes. That is about the best you can do at the time. Not sure about ongoing drug treatments presribed by a Vet. But, I know we have put significant money into Charlie (he had awful ear infections for a long time) and not considered drugs much of an option.
