Question by Valerie A: I am a senior lady with 4 cats that are old nobody would want.?
Senior lady with total reversal of fortune, now broke and losing home. Has anyone found help on how to pay for vet bills or any way to get help for my pets. I cannot bear the thought of putting them down because I can not afford their care it is not their fault I am in this situation. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks and God bless.

Putting down or giving away your pet’s is like loosing a best friend..
It’s incredibly sad.
Have you suggested moving in with a family member or even a friend?

Found pet senior wellness in UTI’s and crystals in male cats?

Question by Aldie: UTI’s and crystals in male cats?
Today, I took my three year old cat to the vet because he had an accident outside his box and I noticed he was peeing blood. Other than that, he was acting perfectly normal.
The vet ran some tests on a urine sample and confirmed that he had a UTI, but in addition to that, he’s also got some crystals in his urine.
She suggested I put him on Science Diet C/D for the rest of his life and gave me some meds. Of course, being a pet-health conscious owner (and I work at a specialty pet food store), I am aware that Science Diet is packed with carbs, by-products, corn, and other things that make me shudder.
When I brought up this concern and expressed my opinion about this food, she told me there were no other options for my otherwise healthy cat and unless I was an animal nutritionist, not to worry about it (I am a senior in college majoring in Animal Science and Nutrition).
Now since I’ve gotten home, I’m been doing some research and I’m wondering if anyone can give me some advice/information/suggestions on what to do now. I would like to keep him on a natural grain and by-product free food. Right now, he’s on Wellness Healthy Weight and gets fed 2/3 cup twice a day. He’s been on this type of food since July 08.
I just want to keep my big fellow happy and healthy. And when she told me I needed Science Diet for the rest of his life… Red flags went up. So any useful information and experiences is greatly appreciated.
I asked her why only Science Diet. She gave me another brand of prescription-only food by Royal Canin. But it’s also junk after I looked it up. The only answer she would give me was call Wellness and see what they recommend. Or call Hill’s.
She was very closed-book with me about the whole thing, so I’m really iffy about continuing bringing my animals there. I’ve read that adding some wet food would help. I also read that the prescription diets could potentially be harmful if used over a long period of time. So I’m really confused on what to do right now.
Thanks for all the great answers so far! This means a lot to me and it’s going to be hard to just choose ONE best answer.
This is his second UTI. The first one was back in September when we first moved into our new apartment. He wasn’t peeing blood, just not using his box and licking his area a lot. When I took him to the vet, nothing could be found so she just gave me the meds and sent me on my way.
But I’m not sure if it was a UTI or just… stress from moving an hour away from where we used to live.
Like I said before, he’s on Wellness Healthy Weight. I’m going to talk to my boss today and ask what she recommends since she rescues and re-homes feral cats. I’m also going to start him on some wet food since I really haven’t been giving him any regularly. He gets it as a treat, but that’s apparently not enough.
The fountain is a good idea. I’ll look into one of those next paycheck since this one vet visit sapped this week’s pay- $ 200. lol

Our cat Guapo had the same problem. Our vet told us it was our water, which is mineral heavy. Try getting a brita or pur filter to attach to your sink and always refill the water bowls from the filter, not the plain tap. He’s been UTI and blood free ever since we started doing this about 4 years ago.

What are some good pets for the elderly?
Im a just wondering if perhaps I have missed a good animal. I have a very old grandmother who doesnt have the strength to let an animal outside and will not clean up after puppies or cats. I cannot take care of this sort of thing for her either. Shes lonely though, and looking for a companion. Something that can take care of its self for the most part and still provides companionship is ideal. Any ideas?

Do you ever listen to an elderly neighbor talking to his/her pet?
It’s not considered eavesdropping if you mean no harm in doing so, is it? My neighbor likes to go to her back yard in the mornings and talk to her two cats. And they talk back. Sometimes she meows back at them, so I don’t get the whole conversation. They are right there near my back window of my computer room, so it’s hard to miss, really.
I’d rather hear this outside my window than most anything else I can think of.
