try pomeranians =) if you teach them well, they are sweet and obedient and smart. also, maybe you might like shitz tsus, dashunds (pretty small), or a chihuahua.

Then you’re going to have to be committed to training it, because a dog won’t train itself.

Good Luck! Smaller breeds tend to be yappy, often stubborn, and poorly bred ones are often aggressive.

Then get a reptile. A dog is a pack animal who likes to be with PEOPLE, not “left alone” all day while you go gallyvanting off to wherever it is you go (hopefully an English class…)

you can easily browse online for some recommendations. if you want a personal recommendation, i have a miniature pinscher and i love her to death. she obeys very well just by my training. her only problems are getting overexcited when i come home or if friends come over, and she does cry a little bit when i leave the house. if you can’t find the time to stay home more often, i recommend adopting an older dog who is potty trained. taking care of a puppy, although cute, takes up a LOT of time and effort.

your best bet is to visit your local animal shelter. they have many small mixed breed dogs that fit your description of appearance. as for the obedience, that’s up to you. you get what you put into a dog. if you want an obedient dog you must train it, and continue to work with the dog. it will take effort on your part and consistancy. go to and put in your zip code. it will bring up shelters in your area and you can browse through all the dogs awaiting a home. good luck.

have you looked at petfinder.org? they have great listings of dogs and should be able to help find one that is just right for you. My sister has a maltese who is very loving and affectionate, but does bark alot; she also has a pug that is very rambunctious and all over the place. Me, I have ferrets. THey are smart, loving, and very loyal as well as independent (they sleep alot, more than 8 hours a day). Hope this helped

i suggest you try a cavalier king charles spaniel! they are a small dog but the largest of the toy breeds weighing from 5-8 kg but no more they come in 4 colors; tri color (black and white with tan markings) ruby (rich chesnut red all over body) blenheim (rich red and white color) and black and tan (well the name says it! black with tan markings) they are easy to train and are eager to please they are total people dogs and always want to be with you if thye are not with you then their hearts will break they also dote on being loved and can put up with anything u do to them they are never aggressive and its against their breed to be aggressive they love play and they are the best family pet they can also be used for therapy work going around to schools and nursing homes. and they are also VERY VERY VERY CUTE!!!! they are the best breed of dogs

I would say a…cat.

Obviously, a dog would not want to be left alone for 8 hours a day. Dogs crave social “packs”. Dogs don’t want a friend-they want a leader. That doesn’t mean be mean, but a dog will lead YOU if you are not a leader to it.

Cats on the other hand, are independent, but love to cuddle on your lap and sleep with you at night. they are playful (as adults and kittens) and come in many different colors and shapes, from the large and majestic Maine Coon to the flowing and sleek Savannah.

Personally, I would look into Manx cats. About 8-9 pounds, and tailless, they are VERY dog like, and even like to play fetch! I love my Manx (and my dog) but I think at this point in your life a cat might be a better pet for you. Dogs are extremely demanding, while cats are fine left alone, not to mention easily litter trained!

If you really want a dog, then step up the commitment level, and do some research on your own. You didn’t tell us if you would be willing to let your dogs run on acreage, or if it will have to settle for a short walk, then live in an apartment. That alone has a massive impact on what breeds would be suited for you.

But honestly, look into a cat!

All breeds are capable of obedience, but you have to train them to be that way. And a lot of little breeds (maltese, shih tzus, lhasas, pomeranians, havanese, etc) have to be groomed often.
Their hair can grow long, so you have to keep it trimmed. Pomeranians don’t get long fur like the other breeds, but require a lot of brushing, because with that thick coat, mats can form.
Chihuahuas and Italian Greyhounds are small and their hair stays really short.
