How do I humanely put my elderly house pet down?
Techietoast asked:
Please be reverent and understanding. My elderly male cat has become bowel & urinary incontinent; that is, he cannot control his faculties. He is almost 10 years old. I am wanting clean, proper, and responsible answers to a most difficult decision that my wife and I are having to make.

Please do not be crass, abusive, and/or distasteful. I will not hesitate to report anyone to Yahoo that is.

I would suggest to take the advise of your vet first. If he/she diagnoses that your cat cannot be saved anymore by any thorough medication, then euthanasia must be administered. It is simply an injection that will affect your pet’s heart. In merely seconds, the heart will stop beating.Simple and peaceful. It is one of the most common and favoured technique that pet owners prefer to do with suffering pets.

You should take the animal to a vet, you shouldn’t even be considering doing this yourself.
In fact that seems pretty crass and distasteful in my view.
And no matter how many thumbs down I get….I’m still right aren’t I?
The kindest thing to do is to take your cat to the vets and discuss his prognosis and quality of life. If it is poor then you can opt for euthanasia – which is a quick injection that works like an overdose of anaesthetic. It should be peaceful and dignified that way.
The obvious answer is to take the cat to a veterinarian. Another option in the area I live in, the local animal control will euthanize for people who are on hard times and can’t afford having a vet do it. They typically ask for a donation to help cover the cost. Personally, I’d feel more comfortable having the vet do it. It does seem odd that he’s having so much trouble at only 10 years old. With the advances that have been made in pet care over the years, 10 is more considered middle aged than elderly. Has the cat been receiving regular vet care? Could be something so simple as parasites, a bladder infection, or some other ailment that could be remedied. But the place to investigate that would be at your veterinarians. I’m not one normally to automatically push the “vet now” button, but definitely euthanasia is not something to just take on yourself. I know that in rural farm areas it’s not unheard of for people to take matters in their own hands and just shoot the animal themselves, and if done right, it’s as fast as an injection, but it’s not something that a person would want to just “have a go at”. In some regions it’s even illegal, but in others there are no laws pertaining to it because the last I heard, it was considered by the AVMA to be an acceptable means to end an animals life.
Like others mentioned the first phone call is to the Vet.
If your don’t have a vet or cannot afford the fee to euthanize an animal, contact your local SPCA or community humane services. In my community the Humane services department will euthanize any animal free of charge one day a week. The Spca should be able to direct you to a service like this or give you the name of some vets who can do this for you.
Some vets will even come to your own home to euthanize an animal.
talk to a vet. The most humane way to put them to sleep would be through a vet.
