Our dog club wants ways others have found to help elderly’s pets (if owner is hospitalized or dies). Thanks.

best friends dog club member asked:

One of our condo associations banned pets in the condo for all seniors because there was no one designated to care for a condo owner’s cat when she went into the hopsital, and the pet almost died. Our fire department has had several cases where a single elderly resident was incapacitated (hospitalized) and there were pets left in the home (again, without any caregiver designated).
Further Info: We are looking for temporary shelter in the case of someone who is hospitalized and may be able to come home at some point in the near future. It would be cruel to put the pet up for adoption if the person recovers! In the case of the owner’s death, of course, we agree that the animal deserves to be placed in a loving family’s care, where possible, but being shuttled from one foster home to another is sad in the cases where the animal and owner are both “senior citizens.” Thanks for helping our club come up with a creative way to help seniors or the fire department out in a pinch. What a world it would be if the fostering family could bring the pet to the hospital for visits while the senior was recuperating! Wow.
